I am definitely someone that is motivated by free stuff…and I play to win. Even when I know I am not the fastest, most skilled, or most capable person there, I still give 110%….because you just may surprise yourself and you should ALWAYS give your best. Always.
So…when I realized I had a chance to earn free gifts (including VIP trips for my husband and I) just for hitting certain milestones in my direct sales business, I was ALL IN.
But….how the heck was going to get there? I needed a plan… a strategy….something to hold me accountable and keep me on track! Years ago, I set a goal to run a marathon. So, I found one near by and registered for it. At that point in time, I had only ever run a 10K…..once. I was new to this whole running thing. So I did what every “type A” person does…I read books, articles and researched training plans for novice runners. I educated myself. Then, I took the information and created a plan that would work for me. I took that plan to a few marathon running veterans and ran it by them. All of this knowledge and planning allowed me to create a roadmap I could believe in. And…sure enough…9 months later…..I ran a marathon.
I took this exact same approach to create a plan for my new network marketing business goal….to earn that trip! Here is exactly what I did:
Step 1: Understand the Incentive Program
Read every single document that your direct sales company issues about the program. Understand the Terms and Conditions. Read all of the fine print. Reach out to others that have earned the trip to confirm that you understand exactly how the program works and how to earn the incentive. Knowledge is power, people. As a business owner, you have the responsibility to educate yourself.
Step 2: Break Down Your Plan
Now that you understand your program, you need to set a roadmap to get there that includes milestones along the way. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. How do you earn that top incentive? One milestone at a time. If your incentive program runs for 12 months, set up a plan that has 12 milsteones (one per month). If your incentive program is 6 months long, then you should have 6 milestones along the way.
Step 3: Understand the Numbers in Your Business
You now know what you need to do and you have a roadmap. Here is the MOST critical step of all….to figure out what activity you need to do to get there. You need to take a step back and assess if this plan is even doable given the current state of YOUR business. If your plan requires you to sell 10X more each month and to grow your team 30% month over month, ask yourself if this is doable. Knowing the numbers in your business is what helps you set appropriate goals. For example, let’s say you have been growing 5% month over month for the last year and your goals require you to grow 30% month over month. Well….what are you going to change to make that happen? I’m not saying you can’t do it, friend. Maybe you know you have been really lazy and not putting any effort in and you are willing to commit to more time. Only you know that answer. Understand your numbers and then decide if your plan is a good one.
Step 4: Adjust Plan If Needed
If your plan looks good as it is (and hopefully you are stretching yourself a little bit), then you are ready for the next step. However, if your plan requires you to hit very unrealistic milestones along the way, then you may need to adjust your end goal. Maybe for this year’s incentive program, you will set your goal to hit a smaller prize…knowing that the NEXT year you will work for that trip. I see so many people give up on their entire business simply because they set completely unrealistic goals and then felt like a failure when they didn’t hit it. You have to find a healthy balance between stretching yourself and still being realistic.Remember that marathon example I gave you? Here is what I didn’t tell you. When I laid out my training plan and ran it by a few people, they all told me the same thing…there was no way I could run the marathon in the time I gave myself. I was risking injury and setting unrealistic expectations to follow the aggressive plan I laid out given my current state of fitness. So, I added 3 more months to my plan and changed my target marathon date….and registered for a different one.
Step 5: Establish a Time Saving System
If you want to get to the good stuff…if you want to hit the BIG goals…if you want to achieve higher ranks and incentives in your business, you HAVE to have a system to manage your list. Period. I talk about this ALL the time because it is so important. Your list is your #1 asset in your business. If you do not have a physical list (Facebook Messenger is NOT a list, people), you do not have a business. I use myBeeHyve to manage my list and follow-ups. Because I use it every single day, it actually automates my work for me. I don’t waste time trying figure out WHO to talk to and WHAT to say because when I sit down to work, myBeeHyve tells me EXACTLY who to talk to…and what to say.
If you want to hit the big goals in your business, you HAVE to do MORE with your time. Systems like myBeeHyve do that for you. If you spend hours each week trying to think of people to talk to and re-creating lists of names for the week, you are wasting time. Period.
